Ukraine Targets Moscow in ‘One of Largest Ever’ Drone Attacks

Moscow’s air defenses are still holding firm for the moment. Photo: Julius Silver,Pexels.com

Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Moscow, as it presses on with a major incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. Russian air defence forces shot down 11 drones over Moscow and its surrounding region. No damage or casualties were reported. Drone attacks on Moscow are rare. Ukraine’s latest attempt to target the Russian capital appeared to be larger than an attack in May 2023, when at least eight drones were intercepted.

Following the assault on Moscow, temporary restrictions were imposed overnight at Moscow’s Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports, but all three later returned to normal operations.

The War in Gaza Is Creating Thousands of Orphans as Polio Outbreak Looms

UN experts estimate that at least 19,000 children are now surviving with extended families, hospital staff, volunteers, or managing by themselves. Many of Gaza’s newly orphaned children are injured, traumatized, and haunted by memories of their parents. Medical staff say children are left to roam hospital hallways and fend for themselves. Hospitals label them “wounded child, no surviving family.” Neonatal units are caring for unclaimed babies and surgeons have amputated limbs from many orphans who said “they had no one to hold their hands or comfort them.”

Nearly all of the territory’s 2.4 million people have been displaced at least once during the war. On top of all this abject misery, the UN reports an outbreak of the polio virus which was polio-free for 25 years. A supply chain of refrigeration units and unfettered access to the Gaza Strip would be necessary to contain this virus.

Police Brutality in US Continues: South Carolina Deputy Charged with Killing Unarmed Man, Letting Police Dog Maul Another Innocent Man

Former deputy Treyvon Jonathan Sellers in an undated photo.

A deputy in South Carolina has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and assault after he shot an unarmed suspect five times, killing him, while letting his police dog maul a different, innocent person.

State agents arrested former Florence County deputy Treyvon Jonathan Sellers (29). He was on leave after the 26 May shooting and was fired in July after an arrest in an unrelated domestic violence case. Sellers was chasing 43-year-old William Dwayne Rankin when Rankin crashed into a tree and ran into a nearby home. Sellers went into the home through the back door unannounced with his unleashed police dog. The ex-deputy then ordered the dog to attack anyone in the house. The dog bit Johnny Cooper, the owner of the home, who wasn’t involved in the chase and didn’t know Sellers. While the dog attacked Mr. Cooper, Sellers shot Rankin five times as he lay on a couch.

Sellers failed to give the dog the right commands to stop attacking and the homeowner was mauled for approximately 87 seconds, suffering permanent injuries to his left arm and shoulder. Sellers was charged with voluntary manslaughter in Rankin’s death and faces two to 30 years in prison if convicted. He was also charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature in the dog’s attack and faces up to 20 years if convicted. The fate of the police dog is not yet known.

Mexico to Charge Drug Lord for Delivering Another Drug Lord to US

A plane believed to have carried Mexican drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquin Guzman Lopez is seen on the tarmac of the Dona Ana County private airport, in Santa Teresa, NM, 25 July 2024.

The strange saga of how two Mexican drug lords were detained after landing in a plane in the US in July just got stranger. The Mexican government is bringing charges against Joaquín Guzmán López, the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel founded by his father, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, because he kidnapped Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada — an older drug boss from a rival faction of the cartel — forcing him onto the plane and flying to an airport near El Paso, TX.

The younger Guzmán apparently intended to turn himself in to US authorities, but may have brought Zambada along as a prize to sweeten any plea deal. Zambada had trusted Guzmán and accompanied him to a meeting to help iron out a fierce rivalry between two Mexican politicians.

Zambada was known for eluding capture for decades because of his incredibly tight, loyal, and sophisticated personal security apparatus. Joaquin Guzman Lopez may be charged with treason. According to Mexico’s criminal code, treason is committed “by those who illegally abduct a person in Mexico in order to hand them over to authorities of another country.”

These Mexican drug cartels smuggle millions of doses of the deadly opioid fentanyl into the US, causing about 70,000 overdose deaths each year.

ACLU Sues Medford, Oregon for Spying on Activists

The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon has sued the city of Medford, accusing the Police Department of “illegally spying” on “progressive political activists.”

The ACLU filed the lawsuit claiming the department “illegally collected information on individuals and groups engaged in racial justice, LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive justice, housing justice, harm reduction, decriminalization, government transparency and environmental advocacy, when no crime had been committed. Police surveillance of protected political activities is not only unlawful; it is incompatible with life in a free society.”

The complaint, filed on behalf of Rogue Valley Pepper Shakers, Stabbin Wagon and Melissa Jones, claims police collected intelligence from social media accounts on progressive groups and events, including a Juneteenth drive-in movie at the YMCA and in 2022 before the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and federal abortion rights.

Oregon state law bans police from “collecting or maintaining information about the political, religious, or social views and associations or activities of people who are not reasonably suspected of criminal activity.”

This unwarranted police surveillance is right out of Belarussian Supremo Alexander Lukashenko’s playbook or J. Edgar Hoover’s notorious COINTELPRO and has no place whatsoever in American society.

New York Man Arrested for Operating as an Illegal Agent of the Chinese Government in the US

Yuanjun Tang (67), a naturalized citizen of the US and resident of Queens, NY, was charged with being an unregistered agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and making materially false statements to the FBI.

Tang is a former PRC citizen who was imprisoned in China for his activities as a dissident opposing the one-party authoritarian political system controlled by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). On or about 2002, Tang defected to Taiwan and was subsequently granted political asylum in the US and moved to NYC. Tang regularly participated in events with fellow PRC dissidents and lead a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting democracy in China. But Tang was secretly reporting to the Ministry of State Security (MSS) on these dissidents and had at least three face-to-face meetings with his handlers. The FBI recovered photographs, videos, and documents that Tang collected or created for transmission to the MSS from numerous electronic devices and computer accounts.

Yuanjun Tang is charged with several counts and faces between five to 20 years incarceration if he is convicted.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Draconian Security Services Impacting US and German Interests in China

This girl is one of 15,000 people the Chinese authorities arrested in 2015 for “jeopardizing Internet security.” (Undated imagery).

Intelligence and security services are causing difficulties for the US and Germany. American diplomatic efforts to conduct people-to-people contacts and cultural exchanges are being stifled. German commercial interests in the pharmaceutical industry are also being hampered in China.

The US State Department has been arranging for Chinese students to study in the US. In 2023, 105,000 student visas were issued and approximately 300,000 Chinese students are expected to be studying at American universities by the end of 2024. But the Chinese Communist Party’s security services, including agents of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), have been discouraging these students from going. Their tactics include interrogation, intimidation, and threats of expulsion from Chinese institutions. In some cases, parents of the students have been threatened by security personnel to dissuade their children from studying abroad.

In addition, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) shut down American-sponsored educational exchange programs in Shenyang, Wuhan, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. The security services have also blocked the US Embassy in Beijing from hiring a single Chinese national for the past three years, impeding basic American diplomatic operations.

China’s emboldened police state affects Germany as well. The German pharmaceutical industry warns of possible drug shortages from China as four out of Germany’s 16 states have suspended trips by their quality-control inspectors over tightened espionage laws. The states say they can no longer guarantee the safety of their inspectors on visits to Chinese pharmaceutical factories.

Germany imports almost 90 percent of its antibiotics from China. Europe also imports a high number of active pharmaceutical ingredients and antibiotics from China, which is one of the world’s largest suppliers.

With the emergence of new diseases thanks to global climate change, a drug shortage would be catastrophic. Moreover, unscrupulous actors would take advantage of a shortfall by producing and marketing counterfeit and ineffective drugs in the West.

USAF Veteran Who Fled Child Pornography Charges Now Flies Drones for Russia

USAF veteran Wilmer Puello-Mota at Hanscom Air Force Base, MA, in 2018. (Photo: Todd Maki / USAF / AP file)

A former New England USAF airman who fled the US to avoid prison for child pornography charges has resurfaced in Moscow’s propaganda videos, describing his service in the Russian military as a drone operator in eastern Ukraine. He insisted he is not a traitor. Wilmer Puello-Mota (28) served in the USAF security forces and he deployed to Afghanistan in 2015 to protect pilots and aircraft.

“I’m Will. I’m from Massachusetts,” Wilmer Puello-Mota, who is also a former City Council member in Holyoke, MA, said in the five-minute video released by Russia’s Defense Ministry. “My call sign is ‘Boston.'”

Puello-Mota was supposed to appear in a Rhode Island courtroom on 9 Jan 2024 and plead guilty to possessing sexually explicit images of a child and other charges that could have sent him to prison for at least five years. He instead fled to Russia via Istanbul. Puello-Mota wanted a career in politics and thought being charged with possessing child pornography had ruined his life, his attorney stated.

Puello-Mota served on the Holyoke City Council from 2021 to 2023 and was aligned with conservative council members who supported former President Donald Trump. Halfway through his term, the city tried to kick Puello-Mota off the council after it learned that he had been arrested in May 2020 when police found nude photos and videos on his phone of a 17-year-old girl. He was also charged with obstruction of the judicial system, forgery and counterfeiting.

CIA Chief in Bosnia to Emphasize US Support Amid Pro-Kremlin Rhetoric of Republika Srpska President

CIA Chief William Burns (second from left) in Sarajevo on 20 August.

CIA Director William Burns was in Sarajevo on 20 August to discuss the “worrying secessionist rhetoric and actions” of the pro-Russian president and government of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Serb entity, Milorad Dodik.

Burns, who arrived from Israel, held meetings at the Bosnian presidency with senior intelligence and government leaders. Dodik has raised concerns among Bosnia’s Western allies because of his ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Dodik reaffirmed in February after personally meeting with Putin that the Republika Srpska would not join Western sanctions against Moscow over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Turmoil in the Balkans would play into the Kremlin’s hands as it could distract the US and Europe from Russia’s war in Ukraine. A visit from D/CIA shows the commitment of the US that Bosnia is a priority of its US foreign policy. The last D/CIA to visit Bosnia-Herzegovina was John Brennan in 2016.

Uyghurs Sentenced to Cumulative 4.4 million Years in Prison

Police guard detainees as they appear to recite words or sing at the Tekes County Detention Center in northwestern China’s Xinjiang region in this image released on 24 May 2022.

All told, Uyghurs imprisoned by China in the far-western region of Xinjiang have been sentenced to a cumulative 4.4 million years, a Yale University’s Genocide Studies Program reports. China’s repression could lead to a ‘total ethnic incapacitation for the Uyghur people’ and the true tally of incarcerations are probably far higher.

In 2017, the Chinese government cracked down on thousands of Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities and herded them into re-education camps and prisons.

The 25-page report, “Uyghur Race as the Enemy: China’s Legalized Authoritarian Oppression & Mass Imprisonment,” frames the massive incarceration not only as a crime against humanity and genocide, but also as a form of “dangerous lawfare” designed to erode the Uyghurs’ future prospects for dignity, prosperity and freedom. The study drew on information from the Xinjiang Victims Database, which has data on nearly 62,700 Uyghurs detained in Xinjiang, based on leaked Chinese police documents and other records.

Researchers found 13,114 cases that included a prison sentence, with an average term of 8.8 years, and multiplied the figure by 500,000, which they called a “conservative” figure based on the 540,000 individuals prosecuted by court from 2017 to 2021, to get 4.4 million years.

This massive sinicization program is meant to homogenize the non-Chinese ethnic population. Beijing has also forced cultural assimilation in Tibetan areas of China. Compare the staggering incarceration rates of Uyghurs below.

American Gun Carnage: Virginia Man in Critical Condition After Being Shot by Two-Year-Old

According to the Chesterfield County Police Department, the unidentified man was about to leave the house and had “placed his handgun on a nearby chair.”

The toddler retrieved it and “accidentally discharged the firearm, shooting the victim,” police said.

The victim was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition and no one else in the house was wounded. Reportedly, the victim is the boyfriend of the child’s mother and police are investigating the incident. The cost of an air ambulance flight within the US can range from $12,000 to $55,000.

In an average year in Virginia, 1,160 people die and 1,624 are wounded by guns. Virginia has the 33rd-highest rate of gun violence in the US.

Virginia Federal firearms licenses in 2021: 423,707

Approximately 44.6% of adults in Virginia have guns at home.

Averaging almost 50,000 deaths from firearms annually, the US the only high-income country to report such a high death toll from gun violence. Until America can shed its dangerous love of firearms, this type of carnage will continue.

‘Islamic State Supporter’ in Las Vegas Indicted on Terrorism Charges

A Las Vegas resident who wrote in chatroom that he would be “starting lone wolf operations in Las Vegas against enemies of Allah” was indicted by a Clark County grand jury on eight counts of four different terrorism- and explosives-related charges.

Joshua Robles, a juvenile at the time of his November 2023 arrest, had in-depth knowledge of the Islamic State (IS) group, sought to communicate with members of the group, and had components of explosives in his bedroom.

The Metropolitan Police Department arrest report read that Robles “intended to carry out acts of violence against the perceived enemies of ISIS and their religious doctrine, and the violent acts would take place in the Las Vegas area.” A search of his home uncovered components to construct an explosive device.

This young man doesn’t have to join IS to cause casualties; as noted above, Americans suffer from appalling firearms violence daily.

An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

‘Behind Closed Doors’: Ex-Trump Aide Spills Secrets to DNC

Former Trump White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham speaks on stage in front of an apparent text message with Republican presidential candidate, former US President Donald Trump during the second day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center on 20 August 2024 in Chicago. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

former White House press secretary for Donald Trump delivered a stinging rebuke of her former boss at the Democratic National Convention. Stephanie Grisham told Democrats she wasn’t just a Trump supporter, she was a “true believer” and one of his closest advisers, spending Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving with the Trump family at Mar-a-Lago.

“Behind closed doors, Trump mocks his supporters,” she said. “He calls them basement-dwellers.”

During a pandemic-era hospital visit, as people died in the intensive care unit, Grisham said Trump was “mad that the cameras weren’t watching him.”

“He has no empathy,” said Grisham. “No morals. And no fidelity to the truth. He used to tell me, ‘It doesn’t matter what you say, Stephanie. Say it enough, and people will believe you.'”

Grisham said she resigned the same day she asked former first lady Melania Trump whether it was OK to tweet that “peaceful protest are the right of every American, but there is no place for lawlessness & violence.”

Mrs. Trump replied: “No,” according to a screenshot of the conversation displayed at the convention.

“I couldn’t be part of the insanity any longer,” she said, noting she was “skewered” for not holding White House briefings. “Unlike my boss, I never wanted to stand at that podium and lie.” She earned applause as she noted she’s once again behind a podium — “advocating for a Democrat.”

You can only imagine how former President Trump must have reacted to this.

Kenya ‘Psychopath’ Serial Killer Suspect Escapes from Custody

Kenyan police launched a major manhunt for a serial killer who escaped from a Nairobi police cell, along with a dozen other detainees. He had confessed to murdering and dismembering 42 women. Collins Jumaisi (33) was described by police as a “vampire, a psychopath.” He was arrested last month after the horrific discovery of mutilated bodies in a slum garbage dump in Nairobi.

The dumped bodies threw a fresh spotlight on Kenya’s police force as they were found just 100 yards from a police station. And this is the second time in barely six months that a suspect in a high-profile case has escaped from custody.

Kenya’s police watchdog, the Independent Police Oversight Authority, was looking into whether there was any police involvement or a “failure to act to prevent” the killings. Kenyan police are often accused by rights groups of carrying out unlawful killings or running hit squads, but few have faced justice.

There are approximately 101,000 personnel in the Kenyan Police Service. This summer Kenya deployed 600 experienced police officers to restore law and order amid worsening civil strife and gang violence in Haiti under a UNSC-approved mission.

Joe Biden Receives Rousing Ovation, Gives Harris Enthusiastic Endorsement at DNC Convention

President Joe Biden calls his presidency the “honor of my lifetime” Monday as he delivers the keynote address in support of Kamala Harris during the 2024 Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago, IL. The convention runs through 22 August. Photo by David Banks/UPI.

After a 52-year career rising to the pinnacle of power, 81-year-old President Joe Biden delivered his valedictory address to the Democratic National Convention on Monday night. A visibly emotional President Biden received a hero’s welcome for the act of stepping aside for Harris and was greeted by a four-minute-long ovation and chants of “Thank you, Joe.”

“America, I love you,” he replied.

His heroic decision to end his re-election bid released newfound energy with Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the 2024 POTUS candidate. Biden insisted he did not harbor any ill will towards anyone who eased him off the ticket and called on the Democratic Party to unite around Kamala. Accusing Donald Trump of “bowing down” to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Biden said, “I never have and I promise you Kamala Harris will never do it. She’ll be a president we can all be proud of.”

President Biden acknowledged the protests outside the convention and inside the arena: “Those protesters out in the street have a point. A lot of innocent people are being killed on both sides.” He reiterated his push to achieve a cease-fire deal that would release Israeli and American hostages held somewhere in Gaza.

Meanwhile the Republicans are heading in the opposite direction. Anthony Scaramucci, a senior former staffer to the 45th President stated that the Trump campaign has “imploded.” He speculated that Trump is annoyed due to public backlash to Project 2025 and his picking JD Vance as his running mate.  Trump is angrily looking for a scapegoat and considering firing top advisors, Scaramucci suggested.

US Intelligence: Iran Behind Efforts to Infiltrate Trump, Harris Campaigns

The FBI has been investigating alleged Iranian cybercriminals such as these suspects for years.

The US intelligence community disclosed that Iran was behind a recent hack of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and efforts to infiltrate the presidential campaign of the Democratic Party. The confirmation came in a joint statement from the FBI, the ODNI, and CISA (see link below).

The agencies have warned during the election cycle that Iran was employing efforts to influence the presidential contest and “observed increasingly aggressive Iranian activity” targeting the US public and the two presidential campaigns. The statement from the USIC did not elaborate on the activity, but said Iran and also Russia have employed similar tactics worldwide.

After the 13 July assassination attempt on him by a disaffected young white man in Butler, PA, Donald Trump wildly accused the Iranians of being behind it. He then accused the Iranians of leaking damaging information about JD Vance. Remarkably, Trump was correct about the cyber-espionage.

Iran has denied the allegations through its mission in the UN. In a statement to The New York Times: “The Iranian government neither possesses nor harbors any intent or motive to interfere in the US presidential election.”

Ukraine Now Controls Over 1,250 Square Kilometers of Russia

Ukraine controls over 1,250 square km of Russian territory, including 92 settlements, according to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He advised his diplomatic team the military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region was to create a “buffer zone” to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border. This was the first time he clearly stated the aim of the operation that began on 6 August.

Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine captured the largest number of Russian prisoners in a single operation. This was also Ukraine’s most significant effort to free Ukrainians from Russian captivity. He previously acknowledged that captured Russians could be part of a future prisoner exchange.

Russian authorities say more than 121,000 people have been evacuated from the Kursk region since the start of the incursion. 84 refugee centers were set up for the displaced Russians, including inside a sports facility.

Former Republican Congressman George Santos Pleads Guilty to Fraud and Identity Theft

George Santos obnoxiously flashing a white power sign while casting a vote in Congress.

Former US Representative George Anthony Devolder Santos (36) pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, admitting that he filed fraudulent FEC reports, embezzled funds from campaign donors, charged credit cards without authorization, stole identities, obtained unemployment benefits through fraud, and lied in reports to the House of Representatives.

“George Santos admitted that he did in fact lie, cheat, and steal his way to elected office,” said a senior FBI agent from the New York Field Office (NYFO).

During the 2022 election cycle, Santos and an accomplice devised and executed a fraudulent scheme to obtain money for the campaign by submitting materially false reports to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). He then devised and executed a fraudulent scheme to steal the personal identity and financial information of contributors to his campaign. Santos operated a limited liability company through which he defrauded prospective political supporters. Santos also applied for and received unemployment insurance benefits from NYS. Lastly, Santos made false statements to the US Clerk of the House of Representatives on his Financial Disclosure Statement.

Santos is scheduled to be sentenced on 7 Feb 2025 and faces a mandatory minimum of two years and a maximum of 22 years in prison. As part of the guilty plea, George Santos will pay restitution of $373,749.97 and must forfeit $205,002.97.

IDF: Six Hostages’ Bodies Retrieved from Gaza Strip

Undated imagery of Shin Bet commandos in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF and the Shin Bet recovered the bodies of five hostages from the Khan Younis area of the Gaza Strip. Five of their deaths had already been announced by Israel, though Avraham Munder was thought to still be alive. The kidnappers previously claimed that Mr Popplewell died of wounds sustained in an Israeli airstrike months ago.

The Hostage Families Forum said the recovery of the bodies had provided the families with “necessary closure”. They added the return of the remaining 109 hostages from Gaza “can only be achieved through a negotiated deal” and called on the Israeli government to “do everything in its power to finalize the deal currently on the table”.

Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023 originating from the Gaza Strip, during which about 1,200 Israelis were killed and 251 taken hostage. Since then, more than 40,173 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza and 500 murdered by settlers in the West Bank.

North Korean Soldier Defects Across DMZ to South

North Korean soldiers look at South Korea across the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Defecting across the DMZ is dangerous as North Korean soldiers are ordered to shoot anyone attempting it. (AFP/Getty Images)

A North Korean soldier walked through the demilitarized zone, the second border crossing this month amid a loudspeaker propaganda campaign by Seoul. The South Korean military “conducted an operation to help him [safely] arrive in the South.”

The defection comes less than two weeks after another North Korean escaped across the neutral waters of the Han River. South Korea has been conducting steady propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts near the DMZ since mid-July, blasting K-pop songs and South Korean news and information across the border.

The broadcasts reportedly call for soldiers working in border areas to escape and include news of the defection of a North Korean diplomat from Cuba last year. South Korea’s military claims the speakers can be heard as far as 15 miles away. Direct defections have been historically rare, with most escapees crossing overland via the border with China. Defectors are granted citizenship and receive financial support and training after being vetted by South Korean intelligence agencies.

Over 34,000 North Koreans have fled to the South to escape dire economic conditions and the country’s brutally repressive regime. However, the number of arrivals has plummeted after Pyongyang sealed its borders and ramped up security in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some 105 defectors arrived in South Korea over the first half of 2024, a slight uptick from 99 over the same period last year.

Tensions remain high on the Korean Peninsula, with back-and-forth Cold War-style psychological warfare emerging along border areas in recent months.

North Korea has sent thousands of balloons carrying scrap paper, shredded clothing, and manure into the South since early June, including one that spilled trash on South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s compound.

Mediterranean Sea Temperature Reaches Record High

Colorful species like the Mediterranean parrotfish are endangered by global warming.

The Mediterranean Sea reached its highest temperature on record on Thursday, reaching 28.9 degrees Celsius, threatening marine life. During earlier heatwaves about 50 species including corals and mollusks were decimated.

Since the dawn of the industrial age, oceans have absorbed 90 percent of the excess heat produced by human activity. This excess heat continues to accumulate as greenhouse gases, mainly from burning oil, gas, and coal. Warmer oceans are also less capable of absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2), reinforcing the vicious cycle of global warming.

The overheating of the oceans is predicted to impact marine plant and animal life, including on the migration of certain species and the spread of invasive species. This could threaten fish stocks and thus undermine food security in certain parts of the globe. Warmer waters increase the likelihood of toxic algae blooms and oxygen-depleted “dead zones.”

In 2021, a massive fish die off in south-east Spain was blamed on hot weather.

Belarus President: “One-Third of Army Deployed to Ukrainian Border”

Belarus has deployed nearly one-third of its troops to the border with Ukraine, the country’s authoritarian leader Aleksandr Lukashenka told Russia’s state-run Rossia-1 television channel on 18 August. He said the decision was made in response to Ukraine allegedly maintaining 120,000 soldiers near the border with Belarus and amassing more forces. Lukashenka also insisted that Kyiv had raised the stakes by launching a surprise offensive in Russia’s Kursk region.

According to the Global Firepower Index (GFI), the Belarussian Army has 263,000 troops and in terms of readiness: 336 tanks, 14 attack helicopters, and nearly 50 attack/fighter jets.  GFI ranked Belarussian military strength 64 out 145 countries surveyed in 2024. The longest standing ruler in Europe, the deeply unpopular Lukashenko maintains a 55,000 paramilitary force and never changed the name of the Belarussian KGB after the USSR imploded in 1991.

The majority of the Belarussian population oppose the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as the cruel and despotic Aleksandr Lukashenko. His statement on Russian TV was a political maneuver to demonstrate his loyalty to Vladimir Putin and a means of putting pressure on Ukraine. But nothing would destabilize the Lukashenko regime more than Ukrainian rockets and drones smashing into the pristinely kept city of Minsk.

Mother and Six Children Killed by IDF Airstrike as Secretary of State Blinken Arrives for Truce Talks

After the Israeli attack, the children’s grandfather, Muhammad Awad Khattab, asked a CNN reporter:

“They were taken by surprise when a missile hit them and completely destroyed their apartment. What did they do to deserve this? What resistance did they have?”

This latest IDF effrontery comes one day after a strike killed at least 18 people, all from the same family in central Gaza. Nine children were among those killed and the IDF claimed responsibility for the attack. The IDF killed ten people in southern Lebanon the preceding day (please see yesterday’s Coriolanus post).

Secretary Blinken landed in Tel Aviv on Sunday night, his ninth trip to Israel since 7 Oct 2023. President Biden expressed optimism with Secretary of State Blinken’s efforts at reaching a truce and releasing the hostages. The US administration seems more concerned about the Israeli hostages than the Likud cabinet.

“It’s still underway, we’re not giving up, [it’s] still possible,” Biden said.

But the honorable Mr. Blinken must deal with a man dubbed by Israelis as the “Crime Minister.” Indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, Mr. Netanyahu has also been on trial for corruption and bribery charges in a Jerusalem court.

Israeli PM Netanyahu has turned the Gaza Strip, once described as the “world’s largest open-air prison,” into an immense abattoir. Since October 2023, 40,000 Gazans have been killed (and over 500 Palestinians have been murdered in the West Bank). ICC prosecutors at the Hague have been seeking an international arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu for several months now.

Marek Edelman, the last surviving commander of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising poignantly remarked:

“To be a Jew means always being with the oppressed, never with the oppressors.”

Donald Trump Campaign in Shambles as Former President Searches for Scapegoat Amidst Falling Poll Numbers and Internal Dissent from MAGA Supporters

Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign is increasingly mired in disarray as the former president grapples with internal conflicts and sinking poll numbers. Staffers and advisors are scrambling to regain control of a campaign that up until mid-summer appeared to be on a steady course. However, Biden’s unexpected exit from the race has left Team Trump unable to adjust to the new political landscape. The former president, known for his reluctance to accept responsibility, is now reportedly searching for someone to blame as his campaign falters.

Moreover, influential far-right figures are turning against former president Donald Trump’s campaign. Some have threatened a digital “war” against the Republican candidate’s aides and allies that could complicate the party’s calls for unity in the final weeks of the presidential race. Nick Fuentes, a white supremacist and podcaster who dined with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., in 2022, said on X that Trump’s campaign was “blowing it” by not positioning itself more to the right and was “headed for a catastrophic loss,” in a post that had been viewed 2.6 million times.

The former president’s tendency to lash out at those around him, rather than reflect on his own actions, suggests that a major shake-up may be on the horizon. Whether this will be enough to turn the tide in Trump’s favor remains to be seen as the 2024 election draws closer.

US Food Recall: Over 167,000 Pounds of Purdue Frozen Chicken

All recalled Purdue products are marked with the same P-33944 establishment number on the back which can be used to identify them.

Perdue Foods is recalling more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken products over fears of contamination. The frozen, ready-to-eat chicken breast nugget and tender items could contain foreign material, specifically metal, the USDA FSIS warned. Perdue said it has received multiple complaints from customers about metal wire embedded in the product, leading it to notify the FSIS.

“There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider,” FSIS advised.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

The products in question were manufactured on 23 March 2024, and were shipped to retail locations across the US while also being sold online directly to consumers. The recalled products include chicken breast tenders and nuggets in different sizes as well as nuggets under the Butcherbox brands.

US Police Brutality: Two Alaska State Troopers Charged After Violent Assault on Wrong Man

A still photo from video footage of Alaska State Troopers brutally assaulting an innocent man in Soldotna, AK on 24 May 2024. Photo: @kylehopkinsak/X

Alaska State Troopers Sgt. Joseph Miller and K-9 handler Jason Woodruff were charged with fourth-degree misdemeanor assault following a case of mistaken identity when they pepper-sprayed, tased, and unleashed a police dog on an innocent man on 24 May. The Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Public Safety said he was “totally sickened” by what he saw on the troopers’ body cameras.

Troopers Miller and Woodruff responded to a report of an illegally parked car. The vehicle was registered to a man whose name was linked to an active misdemeanor warrant. The troopers ordered the driver out of the vehicle, but broke the car’s windows and dragged him out when he refused, protesting there was no warrant against him.

The troopers then pepper-sprayed and tased him. Woodruff then sicced his police dog on the driver and ordered the animal to “bite the man.” Miller then placed his foot on the man’s head, “pushing it into the ground covered in broken glass,” causing his “face or head” to start bleeding. After the man was taken to a local hospital for treatment, the troopers realized they had actually arrested the cousin of the man with the warrant.

Miller and Woodruff have since been placed on administrative leave and the dog is no longer in service. The troopers next court appearance is on 10 September. The Alaskan government can expect a tremendous civil lawsuit from the grievously injured man and will probably offer the victim a healthy out-of-court settlement.

Incidents of police brutality continue unabated in the US. Episodes like this gave rise to the Black Lives Matter (BLM) and De-Fund the Police movements, and who can blame them?

US State Department clears $5B Sale of Patriot Missiles to Germany

The US State Department has approved the sale of the latest variant of Patriot missiles to Germany in a deal that could be worth an estimated $5 billion. The Foreign Military Sale to Germany would involve 600 of the Lockheed Martin-manufactured Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles, which includes 10 fly-to-buy missiles.

Germany has invested heavily in its Patriot air and missile defense capabilities this year as it sends both Patriot batteries and interceptors to Ukraine to support the country’s years-long fight against Russia’s invasion. Patriot’s dominance in Ukraine has attracted fresh attention and potential customers from around the world. Germany is a longtime user of Patriot which serves as the air defense for 19 countries, with 15 of those countries using PAC-3 MSE in its missile inventory.

President Vladimir Putin’s attempt to weaken and de-stabilize NATO have backfired. Neutral Finland and Sweden recently joined NATO and last year Poland made a record-breaking deal for 96 AH-64E Apache Guardian Helicopters. The Apache is probably the most lethal attack helicopter in the world.

Right-Wing Extremist Tied to Threats Against Raw Story Reporter Arrested on Gun Charges

Six neo-Nazis — holding burning flares and raising their arms in Nazi salutes — demonstrated in front of author Jordan Green’s home on 10 Feb 2024. One held a sign threatening “consequences.” (Image courtesy of rawstory.com)

Kai Liam Nix, a 20-year-old Army soldier based at Fort Liberty, NC and tied to white supremacist groups, was arrested on 15 August. He is being detained in a North Carolina jail on a “federal hold.” Nix was linked to a demonstration by neo-Nazis in February outside the Greensboro, NC home of Raw Story reporter Jordan Green. Nix photographed four men wearing skull masks holding burning flares in Hitler salutes while flanking a fifth man, who held a sign warning of “consequences” for Green’s reporting on neo-Nazi youth gang 2119, AKA the Blood and Soil Crew.

The man holding the sign, Sean Kauffmann, along with two of the men making Hitler salutes — Jarrett William Smith and David Fair — had been the subject of Green’s previous reporting.

The US Army has been working for years trying to identify and purge itself of right-wing extremists who enlisted in order to gain expertise in weapons and tactics and then establish networks with other dangerous fellow white nationalists.

In an average year, 1,388 people die and 3,407 are wounded by firearms in North Carolina. The Tar Heel State has the 17th-highest rate of gun violence in the US.

Ten-Year-Old Girl Discovers Dinosaur Footprints On Beach in Wales, UK

“We were just out looking to see what we could find, we didn’t think we’d find anything,” says Tegan, on the beach where the discovery was made. (Undated imagery courtesy of the BBC.)

10-year-old schoolgirl Tegan went for a summer holiday beach stroll with her mother in south Wales and spotted five enormous footprints that dinosaur experts believe are the mark of a camelotia that lived over 200 million years ago.

Efforts are underway to get them verified. Little is known about camelotias but it is thought they walked on their front feet and their hind limbs, were herbivorous and lived during the late Triassic period. The National Museum Wales paleontology curator states that she is “fairly certain they are genuine dinosaur prints.”

IDF Kills Ten in Southern Lebanon Preceding US Secretary of State Blinken Visit to Israel and Start of America’s DNC Convention

Israel Defense Forces killed at least ten people during an overnight strike in southern Lebanon, including a mother and her two children. This was the deadliest Israeli strike in southern Lebanon since October 2023. Hezbollah retaliated by firing 55 rockets into northern Israel, causing some fires but no casualties.

This was a calculated move by war crimes-indicted Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to cause a counterattack from the Shia Crescent during critical negotiations with Hamas to reach a cease-fire and release the remaining Israeli hostages (which includes eight AMCITs).

Moreover, the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) gets underway shortly in Chicago. Any reprisal attack from the Shia Crescent during the convention would demonstrate to Democrats the dangers that Israelis must endure (ignoring the fact that the perils are caused by none other then the bellicose Likud Party).

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III, D/CIA William Burns, and D/DIA Director Lt Gen Jeffrey A. Kruse, as well as the hardworking American taxpayer, must be wondering how and why Benjamin Netanyahu keeps insulting their intelligence with his lethal provocations and brutal policies.

More than 40,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza and over 500 Palestinians have been murdered in the West Bank since October 2023. The Likud Party should simply change its name to the Tsaba (War) Party.

GOP Presidential Candidate Donald Trump Unravelling and Getting Ridiculed

Former President Donald Trump held a rally in Pennsylvania which was reported to have empty seats and video shows supporters trickling out during one of his rambling speeches. The oldest man to ever run for President also shouted out “North Carolina!” forgetting that he was conducting his rally in Pennsylvania. And with less than 90 days before Election Day, the frustrated 45th President has been unable to stick Kamala Harris with a famous nickname, a shtick to attack enemies he may have learned years ago at the fabled Friar’s Club in NYC .

While Trump historically came up with effective epithets such as “crooked Hillary,” “sleepy Joe,” “Sloppy Steve” (Bannon), or “Lyin’ Ted” (Cruz), the ex-president has yet to come up with nicknames for Harris or Minnesota Governor Tim Walz that have stuck. Trump’s attempts at branding Kamala Harris with “Laffin’ Kamala,” “Lyin’ Kamala,” or “Crazy Kamala” have been ineffective on his Truth Social platform.

Responding to a Republican commentator who remarked Kamala Harris is “beautiful,” Donald Trump replied:

“I say that I am much better looking than her. I’m a better-looking person than Kamala.”

A Democratic strategist responded: “This guy has lost his f—— marbles” and Team Kamala weighed in: “Trump melts down over Kamala Harris being on the cover of TIME Magazine.”

Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party have effectively commandeered the media narrative since President Biden exited the race on 21 July. And after the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the two candidates should see a two to four-point boost in polls. Meanwhile, as Trump prepares for his televised debate with Kamala Harris on 10 Sep, he must also be distracted by his imminent sentencing date on 18 Sep for his 34-count felony conviction in NYS.

USAF Security Personnel Exchange Gunfire With Unknown Assailants

USAF security personnel exchanged gunfire with an unknown shooter in a passing vehicle who twice within two hours opened fire on an entrance to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, early Saturday morning. There were no casualties and the San Antonio Police are investigating.

The motive, number of assailants, or how many rounds were fired are still being determined. The entrance was closed for several hours and the base was not locked down. US and NATO bases in Europe have been on high alert after several attempts by Kremlin-linked saboteurs and infiltrators were thwarted.

In an average year, 4,122 people die and 7,726 are wounded by firearms in Texas. The Lone Star State has the 29th highest rate of gun violence in the US. Texas firearms licenses in 2021: 1,006,555. 45.7% of Texans say they live in homes with guns.

Lockouts at Canada’s Two Largest Railroads May Disrupt US Supply Chain

Canada’s two largest railroads are starting to shut down their shipping networks as a labor dispute with the Teamsters Union threatens to cause lockouts or strikes that would disrupt cross-border trade with the US. The union represents 10,000 workers at both railroads and they seek cite crew scheduling, rail safety, and worker fatigue has their main sticking points.

Both the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Canadian National (CN) railroads, which haul millions of tons of freight across the border, have stopped taking certain shipments of hazardous materials and refrigerated products. They are threatening to lock out Teamsters Canada workers starting Thursday if deals are not reached. On Tuesday, CPKC will stop all shipments that start in Canada and all shipments originating in the US that are headed for Canada. CN barred container imports from US partner railroads.

The two railroads handle about 40,000 carloads of freight each day, worth about $1 billion. Shipments of fully built automobiles and auto parts, chemicals, forestry products and agricultural goods would be hit hard, especially with harvest season looming.

Analysts expect work stoppages to last only a few days, but if they continue, there could be significant supply chain disruptions. Both railroads have extensive networks in the US, and CPKC also serves Mexico. Those operations will keep running even if there is a work stoppage.

Nearly 68M People Suffering from Drought in Southern Africa

About 68 million people, 17% of the population in Southern Africa, are suffering the effects of an El Nino-induced drought that has wiped out crops across the region. The drought, which started in early 2024, has hit crop and livestock production, causing food shortages and damaging the wider economies.

This is southern Africa’s worst drought in years, owing to a combination of naturally occurring El Nino — when an abnormal warming of the waters in the eastern Pacific changes world weather patterns — and higher average temperatures produced by greenhouse gas emissions.

Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi have already declared the hunger crisis a state of disaster, while Lesotho and Namibia have called for humanitarian support. Heads of state from the 16-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC) were meeting in Zimbabwe’s capital Harare to discuss regional issues including food security.

Kiev Opens Investigation into Alleged Beheading of Dead Soldier

Ukraine’s Prosecutor-General’s Office is investigating an allegation that a Ukrainian soldier participating in the recent Russia incursion was beheaded. A video circulating on social media on 16 August showed a Russian soldier beside a pole with a severed head.

The Telegram channel DeepState identified the Russian soldier in the video as a member of the 155th Marine Brigade, which is deployed near the Kolotilovka checkpoint in the Belgorod region. Ukrainian forces were fighting in that area on 12 August.

Authorities in Kiev are also investigating a 18 June report that Russian troops beheaded a Ukrainian soldier in the eastern Donetsk region.

The desecration of soldiers’ bodies, including mutilation and beheadings, is a war crime.

Melting Arctic Permafrost Could Release Mercury into Waters as Temperature Rise

Flowing across Alaska to the Bering Sea, the Yukon River erodes the permafrost along its banks and carries with it sediment downstream.

As our planet warms, permafrost which contains large amounts of accumulated mercury, is eroding faster and releasing this highly toxic metal into the environment.  Though the mercury released from melting permafrost doesn’t pose a toxic threat today, its impact will grow over time. Mercury gradually accumulates in the food chain, beginning with plants, fish, and animals that humans eventually consume.

Natural atmospheric circulation causes pollutants to move towards higher latitudes. This results in mercury accumulating in the Arctic where it is absorbed by plants which then die and become part of the soil. This freezes in the permafrost – where the ground stays frozen all year round – and over thousands of years, mercury concentrations build up in the soil. In this form, mercury isn’t particularly dangerous. But this toxic metal is released when the soil thaws, and the Arctic is warming four times faster than the global average. This poses a major environmental and health threat to the five million people living in the Arctic and more than three million people who live in areas where the permafrost is expected to disappear completely by 2050.

Unless mankind does something soon, the earth as we know it today won’t be the same for future generations.

Trump Campaign in Utter Disarray

DailyMail.com has unearthed a decades-old photo of JD Vance posing with three female classmates during his senior year of high school in Ohio. But the state of Donald Trump’s campaign is no laughing matter as you will read below. Note that then-JD Vance in this photograph is the same age as Barron Trump today.

The Trump campaign is flatlining and in shambles. Recent polling analysis indicate that VPOTUS hopeful JD Vance is less popular than Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s 2008 running mate. On average, only 33% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Sen. JD Vance, while 42% have an unfavorable one. Meanwhile, 38% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Gov. Tim Walz, while 33% have an unfavorable opinion of him.

Financial disclosure statements reveal the modest Walz family owns no stocks or securities. But the young 40-ish Vance family are somehow already multi-millionaires, including owning a sizeable amount of cryptocurrency. The three 529 accounts Vance lists for his children are worth between $31,000 and $115,000 in total.

Does the average Republican in Anytown, USA, whose support JD Vance and Donald Trump are counting on, have this much lucre?

In terms of campaign finance, Team Kamala has been breaking fundraising records and closing the gap between Trump’s huge coffers.

Ex-POTUS Trump recently hired five new political strategists and allegedly asked his teenage son Barron for advice on reaching out to the youth vote. An adolescent pupil who graduated the elite private Oxbridge Academy (annual tuition and full board = $41,500) will probably advise his father on the desires and whims of America’s wealthy elite offspring.

Vanity Fair reported that the 45th President is constantly re-watching the 13 July 2024 attempted assassination of him in Butler, PA. Informants say he’s mesmerized by the video and that Trump may be suffering from PTSD. The former president has not held an outdoor rally since that fateful day.

Worse for the GOP presidential hopeful, he’s relying on futile ad hominem attacks on Kamala Harris. But the syntax, elocution, and logic of his recent aspersions have been simply horrendous. The Philadelphia Inquirer editorialized: “Trump’s Rash of Bizarre Claims and Wild Tangents is No Laughing Matter.”

After listening to the GOP presidential hopeful, retired decorated four-star US Army General Barry McCaffrey summed it up aptly on ‘X’:

“It’s almost impossible to believe that Trump as a Presidential candidate could sound this ignorant. Disordered language. Incoherent thinking. 5th grade stuff.”

On top of the campaign chaos, the former President must deal with catastrophic financial liabilities. A New York judge ordered Trump to pay $454 million in a civil fraud case, while a federal jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million in damages for a defamation case. And for his 34 NYS felony convictions, Citizen Trump must face an imminent sentencing date on 18 Sep 2024.

All of these personal issues, as well as possibly harboring second thoughts about JD Vance as a running mate, must be taxing the 78-year-old Republican nominee for the highest office of the land.

FBI Raids Home of Russian-American Political Analyst Dmitri Simes

Dimitri Simes poses a question to Russian President Vladimir Putin during the June 2023 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia.

The FBI raided and searched the Virginia home of Dmitri Simes, an author who hosts a current-affairs program on Russia’s state-run Channel One television. Simes was born in Moscow in 1947 and emigrated to the US in 1973. He served as an informal adviser to former POTUS Richard Nixon and regularly traveled with him to the USSR and other Eastern bloc countries. Simes also advised the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump and arranged an important 2016 foreign-policy speech in which Trump outlined a vision for greater cooperation with Russia.

Simes’s name was mentioned more than 100 times in the 2019 report by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller entitled Report On The Investigation Into Russian Interference In The 2016 Presidential Election.

Earlier this month, Fox News reported that FBI agents had raided the New York home of Scott Ritter, a former UN weapons inspector in Iraq who has been a frequent contributor to Russian government media including RT and Sputnik. An FBI spokesperson told Fox the search was part of an “ongoing” investigation.

Ritter has supported Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine and in January he addressed thousands of Chechen soldiers on a central square in the Chechen capital, Grozny. In June, US authorities seized Ritter’s passport and prevented him from travelling to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Former Alabama Police Sergeant Pleads Guilty to Civil Rights Offense for Using Excessive Force

The Alabama chapter of the ACLU asked that something be done about police brutality in the Heart of Dixie and the Justice Department complied.

Former Daleville Police Department sergeant Ryan Phillips pleaded guilty to depriving an arrestee of his civil rights under color of law. The defendant lost his composure and beat an arrestee inside his cell, striking him in the face and upper body without cause or reason.

According to documents submitted and statements made in court, Phillips willfully used unreasonable force against an arrestee identified as D.M. Specifically, while D.M. was inside a jail cell, he and Phillips had a verbal altercation. Phillips removed his badge and firearm, entered D.M.’s cell and hit D.M. in the upper body and face multiple times resulting in bodily injury to D.M., including lacerations and bruising.

With the plea agreement, Phillips admitted that he had no legitimate law enforcement purpose for engaging in this conduct, that he acted willfully and that D.M. suffered bodily injury.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for 13 November. Phillips faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, but prosecutors are recommending a sentence of 22 months in prison.

Canada: Ukraine May Use Donated Tanks in Russia

The four-man crew Leopard 2A4 tank is a third generation German main battle tank (MBT).

Ukraine‘s armed forces are now authorized to use donated Canadian military equipment inside Russian territory, Canada’s Department of National Defense confirmed. Ottawa joined several other countries like Britain and Germany that have already given Ukraine the green light to use donated weapons inside Russia’s territorial border.

Canada donated eight Leopard 2A4 tanks, several dozen armored combat support vehicles, hundreds of armored patrol vehicles and 4,200 M72A5-C1 rocket launchers. Ottawa has also provided ammunition and air defense systems.

Overall, Canada has provided around $4.5 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since 2022. The Canadian government has pledged to continue military support until at least 2029.

Chinese Censors Clamp Down on Social Media Posts About Grisly Body-Snatching Case

Investigators from the Ministry of Public Security are investigating reports that Shanxi Aurui Biomaterials had been involved in trading thousands of dead bodies or body parts, on suspicion that the company engaged in “theft of, insult to, or intentional destruction of human remains.”

Social media posts about these horrific allegations on Weibo and Caixin.com have been deleted by the authorities during the investigation.

Shanxi Aorui is accused of “illegally purchasing human remains and body parts from Sichuan, Guangxi, Shandong and other places for processing into bone grafts worth 380 million yuan (US$53 million) between January 2015 and July 2023”, an official media outlet reported, adding that the police had seized “more than 18 tons of human bones” and “more than 34,000 articles of finished product.’

Bodies were allegedly sent to the company from funeral homes across Shanxi, Sichuan, and Guangxi provinces, with thousands of bodies in Sichuan alone. Their bones were used to create dental bone implants. Families received ashes that may not have been those of their relatives or the remains may have been incomplete.

Turkish MPs Brawl During Debate on Jailed Opposition Lawmaker

Turkish ruling and opposition lawmakers duke it out with each other in the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye in Ankara on 16 Aug 2024.

A fistfight broke out in Turkiye’s parliament when an opposition deputy was attacked after calling for his colleague Can Atalay to be admitted to the assembly. Atalay was jailed on charges of organizing anti-government protests but had since been elected a member of the parliament.

Ruling AK Party MPs rushed to punch Ahmet Sik at the lectern and dozens more joined the melee, while others tried to restrain their colleagues. Blood spattered the white steps of the speaker’s podium and the deputy parliament speaker declared a 45-minute recess after the donnybrook.

Atalay was sentenced to 18 years in 2022 after being accused of trying to overthrow the government by allegedly organizing the peaceful nationwide Gezi Park environmental protests in 2013 with philanthropist Osman Kavala, also now jailed, and six others. All deny the charges.

Despite his imprisonment, Atalay was elected to parliament in May 2023 to represent the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP). Parliament stripped him of his seat, but on 1 Aug 2024 the Turkish Constitutional Court declared his exclusion null and void.

Brawls are not uncommon in Turkish parliament. In June, ruling AK party lawmakers scuffled with pro-Kurdish DEM Party MPs over the detention and replacement of a DEM Party mayor in southeast Turkiye for alleged militant links.

The FBI learned that Joshua Colston and other militants discussed a plan to kidnap or attack elected federal officials on Thanksgiving Day 2022. Ultimately, the attack plan never developed due to the group’s lack of resources and the poor health of the members. Colston, a felony convict, was arrested in Georgia and found with an illegal arsenal of firearms: a 9mm pistol, .40 caliber pistol, .22 semiautomatic rifle, semiautomatic shotgun and .44 lever-action rifle. The semiautomatic rifle was reported stolen in Alcorn County, MS,

In addition to the firearms, Colston had a bulletproof vest and more than 3,500 rounds of ammunition, including armor-piercing rounds. The FBI also believes that Colston had training in explosives. This miscreant has prior state convictions in Texas for felony theft and felony criminal mischief.

For at least four years, the FBI neutralized this dangerous fanatic.

South Korean Health Authorities Find Toxic Substances in Shein and Temu Products

Authorities in South Korea report that women’s accessories sold by Shein, Temu, and AliExpress, contained toxic substances sometimes hundreds of times above acceptable levels.

In a recent inspection, 144 products from Shein, AliExpress, and Temu were tested, and multiple products from all companies failed to meet legal standards.

Shoes from Shein were found to contain significantly high levels of phthalates — chemicals used to make plastics more flexible — with one pair 229 times above the legal limit.

“Phthalate-based plasticisers affect reproductive functions such as sperm count reduction, and can cause infertility and even premature birth,” an official from Seoul’s environmental health team reported.

Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly used in home building products, was detected in Shein’s caps at double the allowable threshold. This chemical “is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Cancer Institute, so special care should be taken to avoid long-term contact with the human body.”

Two bottles of nail polish from Shein were found to have dioxane — a possible human carcinogen that can cause liver poisoning — at levels more than 3.6 times the allowed limit and methanol concentrations 1.4 times above the acceptable level

Sandals manufactured by Temu contained lead in the insoles at levels more than 11 times the permissible limit.

Health authorities in Seoul requested that these products be removed from sale. In April 2023, the European Union added Shein to its list of digital firms for stricter safety rules — including measures to protect customers from unsafe products and those that could be harmful to minors.

US Arrests Reputed Gang Leader Wanted for 23 Murders in Peru

A reputed gang leader suspected in 23 killings in Peru was arrested in the tiny village of Endicott, NY, by US immigration authorities. Gianfranco Torres-Navarro, the leader of “Los Killers” is being held at a federal detention facility near Buffalo. After killing retired police officer Cesar Quegua Herrera and shooting a municipal employee at a restaurant in San Miguel in March, Torres-Navarro fled Peru and entered the US via the Texas-Mexico border.

ICE agents also arrested Torres-Navarro’s girlfriend, Mishelle Sol Ivanna Ortiz Ubillus, described as his right hand, cashier, and lover. She is being held at a processing center in Pennsylvania. Ubillus had a sizable following on the social media platform TikTok where she showed off their lavish lifestyle, including designer clothes, resort vacations, as well as target shooting at a gun range.

Colonel Franco Moreno, head of Peru’s High Complexity Crime Investigations Division, said they tracked phone calls, geolocations, and messages from Torres-Navarro and members of his gang

“[Torres-Navarro] is a highly dangerous criminal who believed he was untouchable and responsible for 23 murders, including other gang leaders who ended up dead along with their families, all in order to increase his criminal leadership,” Moreno concluded.

Young Palestinian Man Killed as Israeli Settlers Torch Homes and Cars in West Bank Village

The Palestinian Authority health ministry said 23-year-old Rasheed Seda was killed and another Palestinian was critically wounded by the “settlers’ bullets.”

Dozens of extremist Israeli settlers, many of them masked, rampaged in the West Bank Palestinian village of Jit, setting fire to homes and vehicles. A Palestinian man was killed in the attack.

The settlers hurled stones and Molotov cocktails, torching at least four homes and six vehicles in the village, located just west of Nablus. More than 100 assailants were involved. Minutes after the “grave incident” was reported, troops and border police officers were dispatched to the scene. The IDF said the troops used riot dispersal means and fire rounds in the air while taking the Israelis out of the village.

Israeli authorities rarely arrest Jewish perpetrators in such attacks. Rights groups lament that convictions are even more unusual, and the vast majority of charges in such attacks are dropped.

While many members of the Israeli cabinet condemned the attack, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the storming of Jit was “not connected in any way to the settlement enterprise or to settlers.”

According to the UN, more than 500 Palestinians have been murdered in the West Bank over the past several years. Recently, the US sanctioned four Israeli settlers for violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, but these measures were apparently not enough to deter this type of wanton rampaging, murder, and displacing Palestinians from their homes.

Cardinals Superfan Known as Rally Runner Gets Ten Months in Prison for January 6 Attack on Capitol

Rally Runner, F.K.A., Daniel Donnelly, Jr. (44) of St. Louis, MO, was sentenced to ten months in prison, 24 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $3,000 in fines and restitution by US District Judge Jia M. Cobb. Runner previously pleaded guilty to a felony charge of obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder on 22 March 2024.

Rally Runner attended the former President’s rally at the Ellipse on 6 Jan 2021. Runner then proceeded to the US Capitol building and then to the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, wearing a red “Keep America Great” hat, red jacket, and distinctive red face paint. The Tunnel was the site of some of the most violent attacks against US Capitol Police officers that day. Seditionists at the Tunnel battled police officers for hours as they attempted to storm the Capitol building. Police had retreated inside the Tunnel to protect an entrance to the Capitol building.

The defendant made his way to the threshold of the Tunnel’s entrance, facing off with police while holding a riot shield he had obtained earlier. USCP officers attempted to move the crowd out of the Tunnel. Runner is seen holding up the stolen riot shield to the USCP officers, forming a wall in connection with other shields held by other seditionists. After finally being forced out of the Tunnel, Runner triumphantly celebrated his conduct.

Tucker Carlson featured this flamboyant seditionist on a December 2021 segment of his now-canceled Fox News show. Carlson showed an image of Rally Runner outside the Capitol — wearing red face paint and red clothes — as the television host promoted conspiracy theories that uncharged “agent provocateurs” had infiltrated the mob.

NYC Paid $120,000 to Settle Police Misconduct Allegations Against now-GOP Congressional Candidate Alison Esposito

In an episode straight out of the TV show American Horror Story (FX), a former NYPD officer twice-sued over wrongful arrests during her 25 glorious years with New York’s Finest, is a Republican candidate for Congress, a position that pays $174,000 per annum plus extraordinary benefits. Alison Esposito is the NYS GOP selection to run against West Point graduate Rep. Pat Ryan (D-NY, 18th CD). This the same Republican cabal that afflicted the world with infamous ex-Congressman George Santos (whose name anagrams into “Strange Goose”).

Two wrongful arrest lawsuits against Alison Esposito cost NYC taxpayers $120,000 in settlements. In 2005, three black women sued Officer Esposito for wrongful arrest and were awarded $95,000 in damages. In 2017, Esposito was sued again for entering into an apartment building where she “did unlawfully stop, assault, frisk, handcuff, detain, arrest and imprison” an infant named Rebecca Cuevas. The mother was ultimately given $25,000 in a settlement.

Furthermore, Esposito received eight complaints through the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board, though none of those were substantiated. On 12 Aug, Politico reported that Esposito was reprimanded by her superiors in the NYPD after she left her service weapon and badge in an unlocked car which were stolen. We can only hope that nobody was killed with the missing firearm.

What an episode of American Horror Story.

Silk non-Dairy Milk Recalled in Canada Amid Listeria Outbreak: Three deaths

The death of a third person has been linked to almond, oat and other non-dairy milks recalled in Canada for potential listeria contamination.

Do not consume, use, sell, serve or distribute various recalled plant-based refrigerated beverages.

The Public Health Agency of Canada issued an alert on 17 July advising people to avoid drinking certain refrigerated non-dairy milk products produced by Danone Canada and sold in the country under the Silk brand and Walmart’s Great Value brand. Consuming plant-based drinks had been linked to two deaths and 12 cases of listeria infection.

A third death and eight more cases – 15 have been hospitalized and 20 cases have been linked to the outbreak. Thirteen of the cases were reported in Ontario, five in Quebec and one each in Alberta and Nova Scotia; people became sick between August 2023 and early July 2024.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency continues to investigate and said additional products may be recalled. “More recent illnesses may continue to be reported in the outbreak because there is a period between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported to public health officials.”

Beijing Reports “Destroying Large Network” of Taiwanese Spies

The Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) announced they had “destroyed” a large network of Taiwanese spies in the mainland and uncovered more than 1,000 espionage cases in a vow to fight “separatism.”

“The cases involved espionage activities and leaking state secrets,” said the MSS. The ministry cited the case of Taiwanese citizen Yang Zhiyuan, who was arrested in August 2022 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, on suspicion of engaging in “separatist activities” and endangering China’s national security.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council reports that the MSS uses “vague and unclear laws” to detain people from Taiwan who do not conform with the political ideology of China’s ruling Communist Party.

In 2022 researcher Cheng Yu-chin, a former aide to Taiwan’s former President Tsai,  was imprisoned for seven years on espionage-related charges. Taiwanese activist Lee Ming-che was sentenced to five years prison for subversion before being released in 2022, while Taiwanese businessman Lee Meng-chu was jailed on espionage charges in Shenzhen in 2019 for taking photos of armed police officers.

Without further data, this political sweep by the MSS appears to be out of the movie Casablanca:

“Round up the usual suspects.”

Whether the MSS uncovered genuine deep penetration sources, double agents, sleeper cells, low level informants, or commercial spies remains to be seen.

Beijing has dialed up diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan since former president Tsai Ing-wen’s administration came to power in 2016. Tsai and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) refuse to acknowledge that Taiwan and the mainland belong to “One China.” President Lai Ching-te, who is also a DPP member, is viewed with suspicion by the CCP.

Dual US-Russian Citizen Sentenced To 12 Years for Treason over $51 Donation to Ukrainian Charity

A Russian court in Yekaterinburg sentenced dual US-Russian citizen Ksenia Karelina to 12 years in prison after convicting her of treason for transferring $51 to a Ukrainian aid charity in early 2022. Karelina’s lawyer said his client admitted making the donation, but planned to appeal the verdict.

Karelina (33) moved to the US in 2015, married a US citizen, and received US citizenship in 2021. She was arrested in Yekaterinburg in January on suspicion of petty hooliganism.

On 7 February treason charges were filed against her after investigators learned that on the second day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, she had transferred $51 to Razom, a Ukrainian aid group that helps civilians affected by the war. Prosecutors found evidence of the donation on her mobile phone.

This is the same judge who in July sentenced US journalist Evan Gershkovich to 16 years in prison on espionage charges.

According to rights groups, nearly 900 Russians have been convicted of treason, espionage, or cooperation with foreign governments since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Florida Man Arrested for Threatening and Attacking Energy Facility

Source: Case number 6:24-cr-201 in the Middle District of Florida, Document 17. Supplement to motion for detention. Solar panels with cracked glass that Hnaihen damaged.

Hashem Younis Hashem Hnaihen (43) a Jordanian citizen residing in Orlando, FL is charged with four counts of threatening to use explosives and one count of destruction of an energy facility.

Beginning around June 2024, Hnaihen targeted and attacked businesses in the Orlando area for their perceived support for Israel. Wearing a mask, under the cover of night, Hnaihen smashed the glass front doors of businesses and left behind “Warning Letters.”

At the end of June, Hnaihen broke into a solar power generation facility in Wedgefield, FL, and spent hours systematically destroying solar panel arrays. He smashed panels, cut wires, and targeted critical electronic equipment. Hnaihen left behind two more copies of his threatening demand letter. Hnaihen is believed to have caused more than $700,000 in damage.

Hnaihen was arrested on 11 July, shortly after another “Warning Letter” threatening to “destroy or explode everything” was discovered at an industrial propane gas distribution depot in Orlando.

Hnaihen is charged with four counts of threatening to use explosives and one count of destruction of an energy facility. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for each threat offense and a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the destruction of an energy facility offense.

Frustration and anger at US foreign policy, and the fact that Jordan lies in-between Israel and Iran, no doubt motivated this Jordanian to commit sabotage. Any conflict between Israel and Iran could affect Jordan with collateral damage. Moreover, war increases the risk of political instability in the Hashemite Kingdom as an estimated three million displaced Palestinians have been living there for decades.

An indictment is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Four US Flight Attendants Convicted of Smuggling Drug Money to Dominican Republic

Photo by Vinh Lu00e2m on Pexels.com

Four New York-based flight attendants admitted to smuggling drug money to the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic.

Sarah Valerio Pujols (42), Charlie Hernandez (42), Emmanuel Torres (34), and Jarol Fabio (35) pleaded guilty to one count of operation of an unlicensed money transmission business.

“These four flight attendants abused their privileges as flight attendants to move money for drug traffickers,” SDNY US Attorney Damian Williams said.

Prosecutors say the flight attendants worked for different international airlines and had elevated TSA security clearance that allowed them to pass through a less-scrutinized security screening at airports. A cooperating witness operated a money laundering business that specialized in the movement of cash from New York City drug sales to the Dominican Republic.

The flight attendants were allegedly paid a fee to get the money past airport security and hand them off to a person in the Dominican Republic. The four suspects were caught through a series of orchestrated sting operations.

The four defendants face up to five years in prison when they are sentenced.

Ukrainian Intelligence, US Weapons Behind Ukraine’s Successful Kursk Offensive

Ukrainian soldiers ride atop an armored vehicle in Ukraine’s Sumy region, close to the country’s border with Russia, 14 Aug 2024.

Superb Ukrainian intelligence and US-provided weaponry are behind the rapid advance of Ukrainian forces into Russian territory over the past week. A former spokesman for the Ukrainian armed forces’ general staff advised that Ukrainian intelligence and the US-provided High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, known as HIMARS, had been critical to the stunning advance:

“The real scourge of the Russian army is the HIMARS, which turn into ashes a huge number of Russian weapons, equipment and personnel.”

In addition to the powerful surprise attack, low morale and a high desertion rate are impacting Russian combat effectiveness. Pervasive alcohol abuse and lack of potable water at the front forced Russian troops to improvise filtration attempts, using stagnant puddles for daily water requirements. These personnel likely experienced spikes in waterborne diseases and dehydration, lowering their fighting spirit. Up to August this year, Russian courts received 5,204 cases of military personnel accused of abandoning their positions. Throughout 2023, the courts have already logged a total of 5,096 cases.

Despite having to defend Russian soil for the first time in decades, Vladimir Putin — who has insisted since it started on calling his full-scale invasion of Ukraine a “special military operation” — still seems reluctant to admit that he has taken Russia into war.

The President of Russia continues to describe the Ukrainian offensive as a “large-scale provocation,” announcing the start of a “counter-terrorist operation” in response. Putin is carefully couching his language because he does not want to draw attention of his failure to defend Russia’s borders.

Arizona Man Pleads Guilty to Threatening Public Officials and Killing FBI Agents

Michael Lee Tomasi (37) of Rio Verde, AZ, pleaded guilty to making threats against federal officials, including killing FBI agents. During his arrest, agents uncovered three firearms, including a Smith & Wesson AR-15-style rifle, 5,000 rounds of ammunition, and body armor. A loaded handgun was found in his vehicle.

From May 2021 through November 2023, while living in Colorado and Arizona, Tomasi used social media to incite violence and threaten a variety of individuals and groups, including a city district attorney and a state court judge. The defendant specifically wanted to subject a US congresswoman to “the horror of a violent rape.”

On 26 Aug 2023 Tomasi posted a specific threat to kill FBI agents:

“Shoot the FBI first and ask questions later. . . .  Any FBI [] have a problem with that[,] come to my house and see what happens. Shoot before they even pull their guns out of their trunk and you shoot to kill.”

Well, the FBI did have a problem with that and everybody, including Mr. Tomasi, did get to see what happened. This rank imbecile is scheduled to be sentenced on 23 Oct 2024. He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

In an average year in Arizona, 1,054 people die by firearms violence, with a rate of 14.7 deaths per 100,000 people. The Grand Canyon State has the 18th-highest rate of gun deaths in the US. Arizona firearms licenses on record in 2021: 258,691. An estimated 46.3% of adults have guns at home.

WHO Declares Monkeypox (mpox) Global Public Health Emergency for Second Time in Two Years

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak of the viral infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that has spread to Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. The disease is spreading at an alarming rate, with more than 17,000 suspected cases and more than 500 deaths this year, mainly among children in the DRC.

The outbreak in Congo began with the spread of an endemic strain, known as clade I. But a new variant, clade Ib, appears to spread more easily through routine close contact. Usually mild, mpox is fatal in rare cases and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions on the body. No vaccines are available yet for this variant of mpox.

‘Got Him in a Chokehold’: Expert Tells CNN Trump is Having ‘Complete Meltdown’

Link to CNN interview: https://youtu.be/lavvIgom2Zs

Donald Trump’s campaign is in a tailspin as the Republican presidential nominee’s attacks on Kamala Harris fail to land, one Democratic strategist told CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

“It’s very clear the former president is unraveling. He’s having a complete meltdown,” said Ashley Etienne, a former Joe Biden staffer and political advisor.

“Kamala Harris has got him a chokehold that is really driving him to the point of insanity, and really driving his campaign to the point of paralysis.”

Etienne points out that Trump’s rise in the polls has flatlined, while Harris’ star continues to rise. She compared Trump’s campaign to a shop that “needs new customers.”

“Trump can’t help himself but to be Donald Trump and the more people see of him, the more they are turned off by him,” Etienne said. “There’s too many people that don’t like Donald Trump and he has no path to growth.”

What’s also frustrating for Trump is that “all of his attacks against Kamala Harris are being undermined by the facts,” Etienne said, noting the strong economy and reduced number of border crossings.

“You underestimate Kamala Harris at your own peril and Donald Trump is finding that out now,” Etienne concluded.

Suspected Sabotage Attempts at Two Military Bases in Germany

A German military base was sealed off for several hours as authorities investigated suspected sabotage while a NATO airbase dealt with an intrusion incident.

The Bundeswehr base in Cologne-Wahn was locked down because of “a suspicion of an attempted intrusion and a suspicion of sabotage,” said a German defense ministry spokesman in Berlin. A hole was discovered in a fence near drinking water storage facilities. The perpetrators had not been found and personnel on the Bundeswehr base were advised not to drink the tap water over concerns that the water supply “may be contaminated”. The base re-opened later in the day.

The Cologne-Wahn base near Bonn, houses several military and civilian facilities of the German armed forces as well as aircraft used by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his ministers for government travel. The base is also an important hub for military support for Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers regularly fly home from there, via Poland, after receiving training in Germany.

A NATO base in the western German town of Geilenkirchen meanwhile dealt with a suspicious trespassing incident and police are investigating the incident. Following the lockdown at the Cologne-Wahn base, the NATO site also increased its security level and conducted routine checks of its water supply. The base, home to NATO AWACS reconnaissance aircraft, was not sealed off and continued operating at full capacity.

Germany and NATO have been on high alert for sabotage and attacks on its military facilities in the wake of Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. In April 2024, investigators arrested two German-Russian men on suspicion of spying for Russia and planning attacks in Germany, including against US Army facilities, to undermine military support for Ukraine.

North Korean Soldiers Loot Food and Supplies in Flood-Ravaged Areas

North Korean soldiers mobilized to rebuild flood-destroyed towns are stealing food and other necessities from helpless local residents because the regime didn’t supply the unit with food or supplies. The troops are part of a new unit called the Paektusan Hero Youth Shock Brigade tasked with rebuilding efforts after heavy rains caused massive flooding near the mouth of the Yalu River, separating North Korea from China. 7,000 acres of land and 4,100 homes were submerged and as many as 1,500 residents are dead or missing from this catastrophe.

Kim Jong-Un had declined an offer of assistance from Beijing.

When the Shock Brigade arrived, they immediately built a barracks, “but the government did not supply materials,” a local resident said. “The brigade salvaged wood and bricks from houses that collapsed from the flood and built temporary lodging.”

Moreover, the Pyongyang government also did not provide food, so the soldiers were responsible for feeding themselves until government supplies arrived.

“The troops went around private gardens that had been swept away by flood, they picked fallen corn ears and roasted them,” a local resident said. “The troops went into the city at night and stole things such as coal and salted cabbage from storage in private homes that were not damaged by floods.” The residents see the soldiers as a burden and a nuisance rather than support from their new Dear Leader.

Sinisterly, North Korean security personnel expressly warned these flood victims who lost their homes, livelihoods, and family members, not to exhibit their grief. To ensure that, these families are kept under strict surveillance.

Five Things the Recent Shujun Wang Trial in NYC Revealed About Chinese Espionage

Chinese American author Shujun Wang speaks with reporters outside of federal court in Brooklyn after he was found guilty of espionage 6 Aug 2024. (Jane Tang/RFA)

The case against Shujun Wang, a former academic in Flushing, Queens, recently unfolded in a Brooklyn courthouse. Federal prosecutors presented evidence showing he had been working for the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) for years, providing them with information about the pro-democracy movement in the US. The evidence in the trial provided insights into the tactics Chinese intelligence officers use to spy and “to silence, harass, intimidate people right here in New York,” said one of the prosecutors.

Here are five things learned about MSS methods from the court case.

One: Chinese intelligence work can be a long family affair

Wang was first approached by Chinese intelligence while he was visiting his hometown, Qingdao, in 2003. The meeting took place because of a family connection. The officer had gone to school with Wang’s nephew and was also a neighbor of the Wang family.

Years later, in 2016, Wang met two other officers through his daughter and son-in-law, who co-owned businesses in Hong Kong. The officers worked at a different MSS branch, in Guangdong province. Wang’s daughter and son-in-law had turned to the officers for assistance in the past and had asked them for help in recovering money after a business transaction had gone wrong.

These interactions would not have seemed out of the ordinary for Wang, as the intelligence officers’ connections to him were a form of guanxi – cultivated relationships based on mutual obligations, where favors are expected to be repaid. According to one of the government’s witnesses, an intelligence officer had brought “business opportunities” to his daughter and son-in-law, and in fact, on Chinese holidays, Wang’s daughter gave the officers red envelopes of cash as payments for favors, kickbacks or just to maintain their close ties.

Two: The long arm of China could be felt in a Brooklyn courtroom

Throughout the trial, the courtroom was tense. A law student in the courthouse made jokes about spies: “If the CCP sent someone, you’d never know it,” he said, referring to undercover agents from the Chinese Communist Party.

Defense lawyer Kevin Tung said that people in his office, a group that includes many ethnic Chinese, had expressed concerns about being associated with the case. On the third day of the trial, a juror asked to be excused because she was worried about her family in Taiwan.

Three: Methods used by the Chinese intelligence service can be surprisingly basic

The “intelligence reports” Wang was giving to his handlers were often delivered through WeChat messages and phone calls, or via email. MSS officers set up an email account where Wang would save his reports as “drafts” so that his handlers could later log in to read them. For one of the accounts, the MSS officers devised a password based on the date of their meeting: 17 February 2016. And so, the password read “20160217-.”

Four: Chinese spies are also on a budget

One of the officers told Wang to book his roundtrip ticket to China early so he could get a better rate. “You should arrange the trip and purchase the airline tickets in advance to get a discount,” wrote the officer.

“Boss He hopes you can stay in Hong Kong a bit longer after the Spring Festival. Boss He said they would like to cover your plane ticket.” He added a smiley emoji.

Wang responded, “Will comply!”

Five: Prosecutor links United Front and Overseas Chinese Affairs to MSS operations

The MSS, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, and the Chinese consulates work together under the United Front Work system. This system is the leading body responsible for coordinating and carrying out the Chinese Communist Party’s influence work.

The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office focuses on studying and building relationships with overseas ethnic Chinese or who are connected to the international community. The MSS prefers to select targets from existing Overseas Chinese Affairs networks and cultivate them into assets.

Haaretz: IDF Uses Palestinians as Human Shields to Check Areas That May Be Booby-Trapped Before Soldiers Enter

IDF troops in an underground tunnel in Gaza, 4 Feb 2024. (IDF/AFP)

The Haaretz daily newspaper reported that IDF troops operating in Gaza have been using Palestinian civilians as human shields, forcing them to enter tunnels and homes ahead of soldiers due to fears that the structures may be rigged with traps.

“It is better that [the Palestinians] explode and not the soldiers,” said an IDF commander, justifying the human shield practice.

The IDF said it was reviewing the allegations.

According to the report, which cited testimonies obtained from returning IDF soldiers who have regularly witnessed use of this tactic, troops scouted out Gazan civilians who they believed will be an asset to them while operating in dense urban areas.

On most occasions, the “recruited” Palestinians were adult men, although IDF soldiers also recounted instances in which elderly men or teenagers were selected. The Palestinians were not terror suspects, but were detained specifically to be sent into buildings and tunnels that were possibly booby-trapped. The Palestinian men were told that they would be released after completing one “mission.” These human shields were kept with the IDF troops for varying lengths of time, ranging from one or two days to a week.

This alleged practice has been widely employed across the Gaza Strip in recent months, and that senior IDF staff, including Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, are aware of it.

One IDF soldier related that he was guarding a 16-year-old Palestinian teenager prior to the human shield mission he’d been selected for.

“You keep quiet and try to convince yourself, ‘OK, let’s go, let’s use them,’” the soldier said. “[The commander] tried to explain it in a rational way, but at the end of the day, you have a 16-year-old boy sitting inside the house handcuffed, with his eyes covered.”

The IDF soldier added that it wasn’t until this human shield was released a few days later that he realized the Palestinian teenager hadn’t been a terror suspect at all. Moreover, the IDF knows “that it’s not a one-time incident of a young and stupid commander who decides to take someone of his own accord,” one of the soldiers reported.

According to the International Criminal Court, the use of human shields is a war crime.

“In the context of international armed conflicts, this rule is set forth in the Third Geneva Convention (with respect to prisoners of war), the Fourth Geneva Convention (with respect to protected civilians) and Additional Protocol I (with respect to civilians in general).[1] Under the Statute of the International Criminal Court, “utilizing the presence of a civilian or other protected person to render certain points, areas or military forces immune from military operations” constitutes a war crime in international armed conflicts.[2]

Ex-Colorado County Clerk Found Guilty of 2020 US Election Interference

A former Colorado county election official was found guilty of tampering with voting machines after the 2020 presidential election. Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, a Republican, was found guilty on seven out of 10 counts in the election interference case. Peters has become well known among election deniers who falsely believe the 2020 presidential election was rigged against former President Donald Trump.

The case represents the first time a local election official has been prosecuted over a suspected security breach during the 2020 election.

“Tina Peters willfully compromised her own election equipment trying to prove Trump’s Big Lie,” Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold stated.

The former county clerk was convicted of three counts of attempting to influence a public servant, one count of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty and failing to comply with the secretary of state. Peters helped breach the county’s election computer systems and allowed an unauthorized individual to access voting equipment and election records. The person posted secure election equipment images online.

Investigators also issued a search warrant for MyPillow founder Mike Lindell, a proponent of election fraud claims, in connection to Peters’ case. Tina Peters will be sentenced on 3 Oct 2024.

American Police Brutality: Ohio Officer Faces Murder Charge and Arkansas Officer Fired After Beating Handcuffed Man

Police brutality against unarmed people continues unabated in America. An Ohio police officer was indicted on murder and other charges for shooting of Ta’Kiya Young, a 21-year-old pregnant black mother.

Young was suspected of stealing bottles of alcohol when Blendon Township police officer Connor Grubb and a fellow officer approached her car. The other officer ordered her out. Instead, Ms. Young rolled forward toward Grubb, who fired a single bullet through her windshield into her chest killing her. The daughter Ms. Young was expecting in three months also died. Grubb was indicted on charges of murder, involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault in the death of Young and her baby.

In the BodyCam video, an officer at the driver’s side window tells Young she’s been accused of shoplifting and orders her out of the car. Young protests, both officers curse at her and yell at her to get out, and Young can be heard asking them, “Are you going to shoot me?”

Seconds later, she turns the steering wheel to the right, the car rolls slowly forward and Grubb fires his service weapon. Moments later, after the car comes to a stop against the building, they break the driver’s side window. Police said they tried to save her life, but she was mortally wounded.

Sean Walton, the family’s attorney, said:

“In no scenario does someone shoplifting contribute to their murder by a police officer. She bears no responsibility.”

In Arkansas, Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott fired Officer Joseph Harris one day after he was caught on his patrol car video elbowing and punching a handcuffed man and then slamming the car door on his head after the man choked himself with a seatbelt.

The inmate, Billy Lee Coram (42), had been in the custody of the sheriff’s office and was being treated at a hospital for allegedly ingesting fentanyl when he escaped. He was apprehended by Officer Joseph Harris and was being returned to the county jail when the assault occurred.

In the nearly 12-minute video, Coram appeared visibly distraught and said that he had ingested a bag of fentanyl the day before. Dressed in a hospital gown and socks, the inmate said that he hadn’t used the bathroom since taking the fentanyl. Coram is seen wrapping a seatbelt around his neck to try to choke himself. After the police car pulled over, Harris opened the door and punched and elbowed Coram several times in the face as he unraveled the seatbelt from Coram’s neck.

Harris had worked for the Jonesboro Police Department for a little over five years and was immediately fired based on his conduct and actions. This incident was referred to local prosecutors and the FBI.

‘I am not a fan’: GOP women in Pennsylvania Unload on Trump in CNN report

Pennsylvania will be one of the most crucial battleground states in November, with both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris‘ paths to 270 electoral votes depending largely on carrying it.

CNN interviews with conservative women in the Keystone State reveal that while many of these women don’t trust Kamala Harris, they are also fed up with Donald Trump.

Joan London, a municipal government attorney who voted for Nikki Haley in the GOP primary changed her registration to Independent. She was enraged by Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance attacking childless women.

“I’ve led a very full life that way, and to say I don’t have a stake in the future of the country … I had some difficulty with that. And all I could think of, Senator Vance, are you going to tell Ann Coulter or Condoleezza Rice or Elizabeth Dole, they are miserable cat ladies? I don’t think so.”

She added that it’s “highly unlikely” she’ll vote for Harris, instead she’ll write in a vote, but that she might reconsider if Trump or Vance becomes “outrageously offensive” enough.

Cynthia Sabatini found herself in a similar situation. “My street was rock-ribbed Republican. Now, you have to shake a stick to find a Republican.” She wrote in a GOP senator in 2016 and voted for Joe Biden in 2020. She has concerns about Harris but made clear she will not vote for Trump this time either: “I watch his campaign rallies. It’s all about him. It’s not about the country.”

Carol Carty, an attorney and longtime Republican, said she was disgusted by Trump’s constant smears against judges amid his legal problems. She has drifted toward the Democratic Party in recent years, saying, “I’m now turning on ’80s songs to go back to the ’80s. In my lifetime, the Republican Party has changed with Donald Trump.”

She voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020. She resigned to voting for Trump in 2024 because of inflation and immigration, but Harris becoming the nominee has made her reconsider.

“I am not a fan of Donald Trump,” she said. And regarding Vance, “I didn’t meet the right person until I was over 40 years old. And it’s by the grace of God that we naturally had a child. So I could very well be one of those childless women and I found the comment insensitive and narrow-minded.”

Senior Republicans recently warned the ex-President’s campaign to curb the misogynistic or racist comments and concentrate on policy differences with Kamala Harris lest they lose the women’s vote this November.

The South Shall Rise Again! Virginia Students Return to School with Restored Confederate Name

Any glorification of a Confederate general or the rebel flag is a glorification of white supremacy and slavery that once brutally dominated the antebellum South. (Whipped Man / Bridgeman Images)

Shenandoah County, Virginia students will begin classes this fall at Stonewall Jackson High School, named after a prominent Confederate general in the Civil War. But in 2020, the school board had discarded the name of that traitor in favor of Mountain View High School after the police killing of an unarmed black man named George Floyd in Minnesota.

According to data gathered by Education Week at least 61 schools changed their names to non-Confederate names since June 2020. But just four years later, the school board in Shenandoah County inexplicably reversed its decision, changing back to the original name honoring the Confederate traitor.

There are approximately 340 schools in 21 states which are still named after traitorous Confederate figures.

After rudimentary searches Coriolanus was unable to locate one school, bridge, or military base in the US venerating traitors from other American wars. For example, Revolutionary War traitor Benedict Arnold has nothing named after him in America. Yet the US seems to have a history of honoring these Confederate traitors.

Chandra Manning, a professor of history at Georgetown University, explained it best. She stated that naming schools after Confederate traitors sky-rocketed in the 1950s after the government mandated that whites-only segregated schools had to accept black pupils. This was the school board’s racist attempt to make black students feel unwelcome.

As an endnote, a federal commission has been re-naming military bases which used to lionize Confederate heroes. For example, Fort Bragg, NC was amended to Fort Liberty, NC and Fort Lee, VA is now Fort Gregg-Adams, VA.

Will Donald Trump Dump JD Vance for Another VPOTUS Running Mate?

You wonder what the evangelists, the American Christian Taliban, and the uber- machismo Proud Boys think of this photograph, taken during JD Vance’s scholarship years at Yale Law School (circa 2012). No wonder the Democratic VPOTUS candidate calls the GOP “weird.”

Speculation has been growing in certain quarters that 2024 GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump might replace JD Vance with a more effective candidate in an effort to resuscitate his flatlining election campaign. House Republicans opined that JD Vance was the “worst choice” for VPOTUS and decorated retired four-star US Army General Barry R. McCaffrey denounced the junior Senator from Ohio on ‘X’:

“JD Vance is a shameful person unsuitable for public office. His comments are those of a stooge for Russian aggression”.

Replacing JD Vance is mere speculation and not yet at the RUMINT level. The 45th POTUS might use the pretext of the JD Vance dossier dump as an excuse to replace his hillbilly VPOTUS on the ticket. Casting aspersions, the ex-President accused the Iranians of leaking this massive treasure trove, the same bogeymen whom he insinuated attempted to assassinate him on 13 July in Butler, PA. In reality, a disaffected young white male from the Keystone State attempted to murder the 45th POTUS with the GOP and NRA weapon of choice, an AR-15-style assault rifle.

Before the RNC convention, Donald Trump reportedly considered the successful billionaire Governor of North Dakota, Mr. Douglas James Burgum, as his running mate . #45 was apparently talked out of this by his sons Uday and Qusay (perfect sobriquets for Don Jr. and Eric that Americans graced the two siblings with years ago). They convinced the paterfamilias to choose cross-dressing JD Vance, a parent who admitted to yelling at his seven-year-old son to “shut the hell up about Pokemon!” The presentable Governor Burgum would have been a much more formidable and stable opponent for Team Kamala than eyeliner-wearing JD Vance.

With approximately 90 days before the imminent electoral Battle of Philippi, the twice-divorced, twice-impeached, criminally convicted ex-POTUS must make a decision soon. Campaign finance laws and individual state requirements for changing a candidate’s name on the ballot after the formal nomination process may prove difficult. And the Trump Campaign might have to undergo another internal vetting process for the right VEEP candidate. Business Insider examined this specific situation and their analysis is linked below.

Napoleon taught: “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”

This axiom applies not just to warfare, but politics, bridge, judo, chess, or any competitive endeavor. Perhaps Team Kamala team should just stay mum and let the glorious GOP Titanic, with all who sails upon her, speed into the massive iceberg dead ahead of them this November.

FBI Seeking Information Regarding Missing Afghan-American Business Contractor

The map highlights areas of HQN Area of Operations. An estimated 10,000 experienced guerillas constitute this dangerous organization. Map: US Director of National Intelligence.

The FBI is seeking help in locating Mahmood Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American business contractor who disappeared two years ago in Afghanistan. He worked for Asia Consultancy Group, a Kabul-based telecommunications company. Habibi was taken from his vehicle near his home in Kabul City along with his driver on 10 Aug 2022. The FBI assesses that Habibi was taken by Taliban military or security forces. Other employees of Asia Consultancy Group were similarly taken, but have since been freed. A Taliban spokesman said the Kabul government has only imprisoned two AMCITs and neither of them are Mahmood Shah Habibi.

A potential suspect in his disappearance might be the Haqqani Network (HQN). The HQN is a formidable Pashtun network based in eastern Afghanistan and northwest Pakistan. The HQN participated with the Taliban in an insurgency after the US invasion of late 2001/early 2002. In 2012, the US Government designated the Haqqani Network (HQN) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO). HQN has a history of abducting Westerners, conducting spectacular attacks, and maintains a close relationship with Pakistani intelligence (the ISI).

The nebulous abductors, whoever they may be, might be seeking a prisoner swap for any Afghans still held at Guantanamo Bay or other US facilities.

White House Blames Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich as Obstacle to Ceasefire Deal and ‘Jeopardizing’ Hostage Lives

A top White House official blamed Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and other far-right Israeli politicians for obstructing a deal that would bring about a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and the release of hostage

President Joe Biden and other US and global officials have criticized Netanyahu’s far-right allies in the past, including after 7 Oct 2023, but National Security Council spokesman John Kirby accused Smotrich of endangering hostages’ lives:

“Mr. Smotrich claimed that the hostage deals are a surrender to Hamas or that hostages should not be exchanged for prisoners. Mr. Smotrich essentially suggests that the war ought to go on indefinitely without pause and with the lives of the hostages of no real concern at all. His arguments are dead wrong. They’re misleading the Israeli public.”

As the White House is working diligently on making a deal to save the lives of the hostages, the US military is helping to protect Israel from an Iranian reprisal attack after the 31 July assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

Mr. Kirby added:

“[The President] has directed that we do everything possible to defend Israel, and that’s what we’re doing.”

In related news, Team Kamala has named Ilan Goldenberg, an Israeli-born former peace negotiator, as its liaison to the Jewish community. Goldenberg, who has served as VPOTUS Harris’ adviser on Middle East issues, has criticized both Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian leadership. He formed close ties with the organized Jewish community during the failed 2013-2014 Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, when he was a lead on the Obama administration’s negotiating team.

There is no word as to whom the Harris Campaign will name as their outreach liaison to the Arab-American community.

The American Warzone Continues: Two Dead, 37 Wounded in Chicago Over Weekend

At least two people were killed and 37 were wounded in weekend shootings across Chicago. The ages of the victims ranged from 13 to 54. To date, Chicago has recorded 353 homicides and the vast majority of the victims are young, black, and male. More Americans were wounded in Chicago this weekend than in the 16 July drone attack on al-Asad AB in Iraq which caused seven non-fatal injuries to US servicemembers and contractors.

Data analysis from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) informs that historically, 50% of firearms recovered in Chicago originated outside Illinois. Strict firearms laws in Chicago or Illinois doesn’t equate to prudent gun control measures in neighboring communities: State lines simply don’t stop firearms.

The Danger of Lithium-Ion Batteries

From the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) website:

“While [lithium-ion] batteries provide an effective and efficient source of power, the likelihood of them overheating, catching on fire, and even leading to explosions increases when they are damaged or improperly used, charged, or stored.”

Russian Military Continues Probing Around Alaska

On 24 July, NORAD detected, tracked, and intercepted two Russian TU-95 and two Chinese H-6 military aircraft operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). NORAD fighter jets from the US and Canada conducted the intercept. This was the first time that NORAD intercepted Chinese aircraft in the ADIZ. This joint Russian-Chinese mission indicates an increased level of military cooperation between Moscow and Beijing. See photo of interception at the bottom of this post.

Recently, the US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Alex Haley (WMEC-39) detected and shadowed a Russian Federation Vishnya-class naval vessel south of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. The encounter comes as US defense officials and analysts are warning of increasing incursions of Russian and Chinese military forces into that region – in the air and on the sea – and the growing interest of both in the Arctic and in the High North.

Bulgarian National Extradited for Illegally Exporting US Microelectronics to Russia

Bulgarian national Milan Dimitrov (50) was extradited from Greece for allegedly violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and the Export Control Reform Act (ECRA). With Ilias Sabirov (52) of Russia and Dimitar Dimitrov (74) of Bulgaria, they schemed to procure sensitive radiation-hardened integrated circuits from the US and illegally export those components to Russia through Bulgaria. Ilias Sabirov and Dimitar Dimitrov remain at large.

Milan Dimitrov is charged with two counts of IEEPA violations, one count of money laundering, and one count of making false statements to the Department of Commerce in violation of ECRA. Each count in the indictment carries up to 20 years in federal prison.

Last year, Bulgarian police arrested twelve suspects for allegedly exporting military goods to Russia in violation of EU sanctions. The smuggling ring attempted to deliver $4.24 million worth of optical sights, ballistic meters, and aviation radios to Russian special forces operating in Ukraine. Those arrested included Russian and Belarussian nationals.

Bulgaria joined NATO in 2004, participated in ISAF (Afghanistan), and joined the EU in 2007, so their law-enforcement and intelligence services are strongly collaborating with their new allies in the West.

An indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
